Hi.
If you're new here, I'm bestselling author J.B. McGee. I took ten years away from writing for a multitude of reasons, but two stand out.
The first was that when I wrote books, I hyperfocused to the point that the entire world around me disappeared. It was all I could think about or do. My family missed me, and I missed them. Because I live with chronic illnesses and disabilities, that pace wasn't something I could sustain. I didn't think I could be both disabled and a writer anymore.
The second reason was simpler. I wanted to watch my boys finish growing up into young men, and what an absolute joy it has been to have them at the center of my world.
Desperate to write again, my therapist suggested I try nonfiction. The words had been waiting for more than a decade, and once I started writing, I couldn't stop. This time, though, I approached it differently. I was more intentional and listened to my body. It's the first time I've finished a book without making myself sick in the process.
Now I'm launching a new contemporary romance, The Question, while continuing to pursue publication for my memoir, Breaking Chairs. I'm still worried that the pain in my head might one day be so loud I can't hear my characters, but so far, even with a potentially broken shunt, they're still talking.
I also love sharing videos, photos, and stories about my cats, especially #MorganTheManx, #TheAlarmClockCat, the CEO of chaos, gift giving, and keeping life entertaining.
