Hi.
If you're new here, I'm bestselling author J.B. McGee. I took ten years off from writing for a multitude of reasons. There were two main ones. The first was when I wrote books; I hyperfocused to the point that the entire world around me vanished, and it was all I could think about or do. My family missed me, and I missed them. I made myself sick doing this because I have chronic illnesses and am disabled. It was not healthy to sustain. I didn't think I could be both disabled and a writer anymore.
The second reason is I wanted to watch my boys finish growing up into young men, and what an absolute joy that has been to have them be the center of my whole world.
Desperate to write again, my therapist recommended I try my hand at nonfiction. The words were bubbling at the surface for at least ten years, and once I started writing, I could not stop. But I was more intentional and listened to my body better. It's the first time, I think, I've written a book and not gotten sick afterwards.
I'm working on a new fiction novel. I'm still worried about the pain in my head may be so loud I can't hear characters, but so far that's not been the case, even with a potentially broken shunt.
